A MUCH-LOVED weekend of all things two wheels returned to the city after a three year absence.

The York Rally first took place in 1945 and ran for almost 70 years until it came to an untimely end in 2012 when three years of bad weather saw profits plummet.

However, a group of volunteers made sure wheels will turn on The Knavesmire once more for a weekend of fun.

The two day event offered family friendly and experienced bike rides around The Knavesmire while well-known bike traders like Hewitt Cycles and JD Tandems pitch stalls.

People were also invited to camp and enjoy the scenery on offer over the weekend.
Peter Elend, a spokesman for the rally, said: "It's been brilliant.

"The whole site is filled with campers and our figures are up massively on 2012, the last time it was run.

"A lot of people who live locally wanted to bring it back and it has been quite a journey to this point.

"There are a few harder rides for the more experienced cyclists or five miles for families, but we have people going out all over North Yorkshire.

"There are some great displays of vintage bikes and we even have a pedal-powered duke box."
