HUMBERSIDE firefighters became animal rescue heroes this weekend, pulling two stranded animals out of rivers.
In less than 12 hours, crews came to the aid of both a sheep and a calf which had got stuck in separate incidents in the county.
On Friday night, just after 8pm, the fire and rescue service pulled a beleaguered sheep out of the River Derwent in Bubwith. Two firefighters in water rescue gear freed the sheep with the help of throw lines.
Then, just before 8am the following morning, another crew went to Tickton near Beverley, where a calf was stuck in the mud of a riverbank. The young animal was rescued by firefighters using lifejackets, 15m and 30m lines, before it was left in the care of the farmer.
