IS Inspector Morse a Yorkshireman? Or maybe from Lincolnshire?
Using the present tense seems appropriate, given that the Morse industry is booming here.
A Perth TV channel is currently screening, on three consecutive mid-week evenings, Endeavour, Inspector Morse and Lewis. This creates some confusion and mystery for newcomers to Morse who might not have read the Morse novels.
Morse’s creator, Colin Dexter, might be the only one who knows of Morse’s birthplace, yet one feels reluctant to approach him.
Mr Dexter will be 85 in September and such intrusion risks being an irritant and irrelevant to a doyen among crime writers.
Long-time Morse fans know, of course, that the detective’s father admired Captain James Cook who hailed from Middlesbrough and discovered Australia.
Mr Dexter himself started life in Stamford, Lincolnshire; went to Cambridge Univerity, then made his home in Oxford.
