A ROYAL footman from North Yorkshire helped deliver news of the latest royal arrival to the nation.
As hundreds of well-wishers gathered outside Buckingham Palace to hear news of the Queen’s new grandchild, George Oates, from Newby Wiske, near Northallerton, emerged from Buckingham Palace to post the announcement of the new baby girl to a golden easel outside the palace – to a rapturous reception.
Mr Oates became a royal footman after responding to a job advert on the British Monarchy website three years ago when he was aged 22.
He began his career in hospitality, working as a part-time waiter on weekends at Bettys Cafe Tea Room in Harrogate when he was 16.
He continued his job while studying for a graphic design degree at university and decided he wanted to continue in hospitality when he graduated.
His day-to-day duties vary, but can range from managing catering for a meeting, to royal carriage duties, collecting guests or acting as a valet for male guests, ensuring their clothes are adequately pressed.
He is expected to work wherever the Queen holds court, whether it is Buckingham Palace, Balmoral Castle or Sandringham House.
