AN East Yorkshire man has received a suspended prison sentence after admitting to fraudulently claiming almost £20,000 in benefits.

Eric Wardale, 65, of Flemingate, Beverley, pleaded guilty to offences relating to making false statements in order to obtain an entitlement to housing benefit and council tax benefit.

Hull Magistrates handed him a 26-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months. He will also have to repay £19,888, pay £85 costs and an £80 victim surcharge.

The case was brought to court following investigations by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, who discovered Wardale had been working since April 2010.
 

Gun salute to mark Queen's birthday

THE Army will wheel out the big guns in York tomorrow to mark the Queen’s 89th birthday.

The Band of the Royal Armoured Corps will march from Duncombe Place, near York Minster, to the Museum Gardens and at noon, three 105mm Light Guns will be fired by soldiers of 3/29 (Corunna) Battery of the 4th Regiment Royal Artillery based at Topcliffe, near Thirsk.

The Deputy Commander of 4th Infantry Brigade and Headquarters North East, Colonel Mike Butterwick, will accompany the Inspecting Officer, the Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Barry Dodd, as he inspects the Saluting Troop, as well as members of the Royal Armoured Corps Band.

The Salute will consists of 21 rounds being fired at 10-second intervals.


Nestle’s KitKat boost

NESTLE has reported an 11 per cent rise in production of KitKats, which are made at the confectionery giant’s York site, in the first quarter of 2015.

The company said first quarter sales had been boosted by an early Easter but growth was dented by currency changes.
 

St George’s Day parade

MORE than 2,000 members of Girlguiding and the Scout Association will celebrate St George’s Day with an annual parade through York city centre next Sunday.

The parade, said to be the largest in England, will leave from the Eye of York at 1.25pm and go down Tower Street, Clifford Street, Nessgate and High Ousegate to York Minster for a service.

Members of Minster District Scouts will lead this year’s parade, followed by Cubs, Brownies, Scouts, Guides, Explorers and members of the Senior Section with their leaders.

Following the service, the procession will return to the Eye of York.


Checkmate for future grandmasters at event

BUDDING grandmasters from across Yorkshire took part in a junior chess day held at Archbishop of York Junior School in Bishopthorpe, York.

The event on Saturday involved players aged six to 18, and was supported by York RI Chess Club and the John Robinson Fund.

Help was given to beginners on the basics of chess and Women’s Grandmaster Sheila Jackson, five times British women’s champion, provided tuition. Organiser Peter Cloudsdale said about 20 beginners and another 40 more advanced players took part in the event, which was opened by the Lord Mayor of York, Cllr Ian Gillies.

He said a UK chess challenge was held, which was won by York College student Ewan Miller, 17, while a beginners’ trophy was won by Mooyeon Won, 10, of Osbaldwick.


Tap left on

FIREFIGHTERS got into a property in Beverley where a tap had been left turned on inside a first floor flat.

They turned the tap off and isolated the electricity supply.


Seagull rescued

FIREFIGHTERS were deployed to rescue a seagull which was trapped in guttering on the fourth floor of a building in Tennyson Avenue, Bridlington, on Saturday afternoon.

The bird was uninjured and released by its rescuers, who had used a 13.5 metre ladder to reach it.


Pupils join the pasta masterclass

PUPILS at Clifton Green Primary School in York received a pasta masterclass on a visit to Jamie’s Italian restaurant in the city.

About 55 youngsters aged six and seven enjoyed a trip to the restaurant in Lendal where they learnt all about pasta and other Italian dishes.

John Hattam, who is the school’s community outreach worker, said: “Once a month, Jamie’s Italian invite schools to come in and take part.

“The chefs helped us make pasta from the very basics.

“We all had a little sample to take home.

“At Clifton Green, we are really keen for our kids to experience lots of different activities, not just reading and writing.

“We believe it is important to give children opportunities that can inspire them.”

 

Early medieval conference planned in York

ACADEMICS and heritage professionals are being invited to take part in a one day conference in York on the researching and representation of the early medieval period.

Organisers said that with museum visitor numbers continuing to rise across the country, audiences were expecting new and updated exhibitions to excite and educate them.

"This constant need for new content can present a challenge to researchers and curators as they try to interpret and represent history in an accessible way," said a spokesman.

"This very issue and more will be debated at a special one day conference, organised by The JORVIK Group, the attractions and events arm of York Archaeological Trust, entitled ‘Researching and Representing the Early Medieval: The 2015 Richard Hall Symposium.’"

Speakers already lined up include David Petts, Lecturer in the Archaeology of Northern England, University of Durham, and Edmund Southworth, Director, Manx National Heritage The event takes place at Rahtz Lecture Theatre, King's Manor, York on Saturday June 20.

York hair salons reach competition finals

TWO York salons have won through to the national finals of a prestigious live hairdressing competition.

Blue Hairdressing and Ross Charles Hairdressing qualified for the L’Oreal Colour Trophy Grand Final on June 1 after progressing from the North East regional round on Wednesday night.

Gillygate-based Ross Charles reached the national stage in the main ‘L’Oreal Colour Trophy’ category, while Little Stonegate salon Blue won through in the ‘L’Oreal Men’s Image’ section.

“We are ecstatic with our win!” said salon owner Ross Charles after their triumph at the New Dock Hall, The Royal Armouries.

The L’Oréal Colour Trophy is the longest running live hairdressing competition in the world.
