NINE out of ten York families learnt today their child will go to their first choice of primary school in September.

City of York Council has revealed its primary school places for the coming year, with 92 percent of children getting a place at their first choice school.

Out of a total of 1,980 families who applied in York, 1,828 got a place at their first choice of school while 83 got their second choice and 23 their third.

Most of the school places being allocated were for four year olds going in nursery classes, but 140 were for children going into junior school places at Archbishop of York's and Carr Junior schools. All of those got their first choice of school, the council confirmed.

Seven children will go to their fourth or fifth choice school; and 36 children - or 1.8 percent - did not get any of their preferred options and will have a place at another school in the city.

In the East Riding, 95 percent or 3,303 out of 3,454 got into their first choice of school.

The area's director of children, families and schools Kevin Hall said: "In the East Riding we have been able to ensure that all children have been provided with a school place and I’m pleased to say that more than nine out of 10 parents have been offered the school place that they wanted for their children”.

Thirty-five of East Riding of Yorkshire Council's 123 primary, infant and junior schools are oversubscribed, a spokesman said.

Sixty one children in the area - 2.1 percent - could not be given places at any of their three chosen schools. Of them, 51 have been placed at their catchment area school and the other 10 have school places elsewhere in the county.
