I WAS dismayed by your headline to the “Speeds increase despite 20mph rule across York” report of March 31.
The text of the article clears states that the average speed decreased, in contradiction to the headline. Further you refer to three roads where speeds increased.
The FoI data released points out that average speeds increased significantly on two roads in a single direction only, and decreased significantly on four roads, and in both directions for some cases.
In any sample of car speeds some will always go up and others down, so the mention of three roads and the increase in mean speed is just wrong.
Far more important to road users is the fact that on Alness Drive the maximum speed recorded was 60mph.
You then refer to the number of accidents on 20pmh roads after the implementation, but give no information on a similar time period before, thus making this information irrelevant.
This report will feature in a forthcoming Skeptics talk on poor journalism.
