A YORKSHIRE First candidate is to fight the York Central constituency in this election.

Primary school teacher Chris Whitwood who was originally due to stand in Cities of Westminster and London for Yorkshire First has moved back to Yorkshire and will instead fight York Central.

But now the party has announced that Chris has moved back to his home in Riccall and will stand in York Central instead.

Party leader Richard Carter said: "We are delighted that he will give the people of York the opportunity to say Yes to Yorkshire.

"Westminster and Whitehall have clearly failed us when three of the poorest regions in northern Europe are in historic Yorkshire. At the same time Inner London is the richest.

“The next few weeks will see us press that home in our campaign which will be positive, progressive and fun too. There needs to be a greater voice for Yorkshire – to help us build a United Kingdom that works better for us. A regional parliament with first rate powers similar to those proposed for Scotland."

Mr Carter said they may still find a candidate for the London constituency, to highlight the election rules that mean Yorkshire First would have to field candidates in more than one sixth of all constituencies in the England - which amounts to more seats than the whole of Yorkshire - to qualify for fair election coverage.

The party was formed to field candidates in last year's European elections, and gained around 1.5 percent of the vote across Yorkshire.
