FLAPPER girls, hippies and punk rockers took to the catwalk at a York primary school to showcase fashion through the ages.

Wearing costumes they had created themselves, pupils at Hempland Primary School in Heworth struck poses, sang and danced to music from different decades while sharing facts from the 1920s, 60s and 80s with the audience of parents.

Head teacher Stuart Outram praised the hard work of the Year 3 children who have been learning about different eras over the past half term.

He also thanked parents who had volunteered to help in art and craft sessions in recent weeks to make the outfits.

“As soon as the first beat came on we were transported back into the twenties,” he said at the end of the show. “It was wonderful. I could see lots of mums and dads with their feet tapping, going back in time with you. The costumes are absolutely brilliant. When I came into the classrooms before the show and the make-up was going on, there was a real atmosphere that something special was going to happen.”

Among the songs performed was The Stranglers’ hit No More Heroes, and the children were treated to a special video message before the show from JJ Burnell, from the band, who is friends with one of the parents, Steve Fenwick.

“I hear you’ve got a really clever and wonderful teacher, Mr Irons, who has got great taste in music and so I would like to wish you all the best for your Fashion Week,” he said. The Year 3 fashion show was staged a day after Year 1 pupils enjoyed a circus day.
