THESE students will be racing against the clock to demonstrate how to build a garden in only 60 minutes.

The countdown has started for students from Askham Bryan College to take on the challenge at the Harrogate Spring Flower Show, which runs from April 26 to 23.

As part of a new series of practical demonstrations, the students will be building two gardens, with one traditional and one contemporary.

Show director Nick Smith said: “Building a garden can be a painstaking and expensive business, so it is tempting to postpone making a change, sometimes indefinitely.

“With the new How2 feature, we wanted to give visitors the opportunity to see a small plot come together quickly so that they can take away ideas for refreshing their garden, or perhaps part of their garden, easily and economically.”

The traditional cottage garden design, by Martin Ammann, who lives near York, features picket fencing, stone patio, lawn and colourful spring planting.

Meanwhile the contemporary garden, by Lynda Parkinson, from near Harrogate, focuses on a central fire pit, bench and gravel with trough planting.
