FULFORD councillor Keith Aspden has welcomed news that action will be taken to tackle dangerous parking near Fulford Golf Club following a petition on the issue.

Residents and club members have reported accidents and near misses as cars park along Heslington Lane opposite the entrance to the Golf Club block the road for traffic, and since January a petition calling for action which has received 601 signatures and was submitted to City of York Council last month.

Now council staff want to look at waiting restrictions for the road so vehicles can get along it safely, without displacing the parking problems onto nearby streets.

The University of York is earmarked to fund the scheme, and a “broader parking review” could also be undertaken in collaboration with the university.

Lib Dem Cllr Aspden said: "I am pleased that following my petition officers have recognised the significant local concern over this issue and are recommending that action be taken and a plan be put in place, to be brought forward from April. It is only a shame that it has taken many complaints from residents and my petition to get to this stage."

The plans will now go to a cabinet member decision session on Thursday, March 26.
