TEARS mingled with joy as the sister of a war hero killed in Afghanistan wed the friend who tried in vain to save his life.

There were poignant reminders of the tragedy as Rosie-Ann Stone, 22, tied the knot with Private Liam Fisher in York Minster.

Liam tried to save her brother Gregg’s life as a battle raged around them on June 3, 2012.

The couple got engaged last November - just months after Rosie-Ann was acquitted of killing her elder sister Jennie, 26, by careless driving while over taking a lorry.

Rosie-Ann said before the wedding: "We are so happy. Gregg would be giddy. He would be shocked, but he'd be so pleased."

Gregg's widow, Sam, was a bridesmaid, while Sam and Gregg's daughter, Grace, who was born six months after he died, was a flower girl.

Gregg, 20, of Atwick, near Hornsea, East Yorkshire, had been on a mission to rescue an Afghan policeman kidnapped by the Taliban when tragedy struck.

Dr John Sentamu, The Archbishop of York, was so moved by the story of the family who lost both a son and daughter in eight months that he granted a special licence for the couple to marry in the Minster.

Rosie-Ann and Liam met at Gregg's inquest in Hull in May 2013.
