AN IRISH dance academy is expanding to find York's budding Michael Flatleys.

The O'Connor Academy of Irish Dance is opening new premises in the Orchard Park Community Centre, in Huntington, after owner Victoria Whincup decided to extend the school from its base in Hull.

Miss Whincup, 28, a former World championship competitor, will open the doors of her new centre on April 15 to both children and adults.

She said: "I do quite a few classes in Hull and wanted to expand.

"I like York and, as far as I'm aware , it doesn't have classes like this anywhere, so that's why I decided to come here.

"Irish dancing has played a huge role in my life for more than 20 years and I've danced for the Margaret McAleer School for most of my career.

"I competed at an elite level, travelling internationally to take part in numerous competitions, winning first place at the regional world qualifying twice, and became the only person from Hull to represent the city at the World Irish Dance Championships.

"My aim is to teach Irish Dancing to the best of a child's ability and to make it an enjoyable and memorable experience for all involved.

"Progression leads to competitions and shows, but it's not a requirement to compete."

During her time competing, Miss Whincup, of Hull, also achieved a first class honours degree while studying in Cambridge.

The dance academy is to hold classes from beginner to championship level, and are open to youngsters from the age of three.

The O'Connor Academy of Irish Dance is registered with An Coimisiun Le Rinci Gaelacha, the largest governing body for Irish Dance.
