CHILDREN at a York primary school have dressed in blue to support a little boy with an extremely rare genetic disorder.

Blake Knaggs who is 14-months-old was guest of honour at St Aelred's Primary School's assembly yesterday where all the children took part in "Wear blue for Blake's genes day".

Blake, of Huntington, is one of only 57 children in the world to be diagnosed as suffering from Mucolipidosis II ML2 (MPS).

Blake was accompanied by his aunt Joanne Addinall to the assembly, which was led by family friends and pupils at the school, Rebecca and Jessica Wake, who explained his condition.

Joanne said: "They were a lovely bunch of children. The kids asked questions if they wanted.

"It's not about how much we raise, it's about getting the message across and helping people."

The condition, inherited from his parents Louise and Paul, who are both carriers, is incurable and he has a very poor chance of reaching his fifth birthday.

Many organisations across York will today wear blue.

Funds raised will go towards the Society for Mucopolysaccharide Diseases to fund research into the condition, while some will go to Martin House Children’s Hospice, where Blake has stayed and some will be used to create a sensory room full of stimulating colour and light at his home.
