THIS dramatic footage show the moments when thieves stole £2,500 of hair styling products from a York salon after smashing their way through the door.

The CCTV images were recorded inside Bang hair salon in Low Petergate at about 12.30am on Wednesday, when thieves prised an iron grate from the street and threw it through the glass door to gain entry.

In the raid, which lasted about 30 seconds, the thieves stole £2,500 worth of boxed GHD products, including hair straighteners, mini straighteners and a hair drier and made their escape down Low Petergate.

The footage shows the safety glass implode into the salon, before one man kicks the remaining broken glass from the bottom of the frame and enters with a second thief.

They make their way to the GHD display shelves, and quickly put more than 20 items into a large bag, before walking back out through the smashed door. The video shows the second thief hand over the bag to his associate, before stealing more items from s shelf next to the counter. He then knocks more broken glass from the frame as he exits.

Shopkeeper John Cotton

Jonathan Cotton, owner of the salon, said: "It was a smash and grab, they went straight for a few things within close proximity to the door.

"You can see the window implode, it's quite dramatic to watch. They are in and out in 30 seconds."

The theft was carried out in a similar manner to recent break-ins at Links of London in Stonegate last week, where watches and jewellery worth £26,000 were stolen in two raids. Two men have since been arrested and released on bail for the Links burglaries, and a North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said there was "no reason to link the break-ins at this stage".

She said no arrests had yet been made in the investigation, but urged anyone with information or who has been offered GHD items for sale to phone York CID on 101 or Crimstoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
