KIND-HEARTED youngsters have taken it upon themselves to buy their injured friend a new bike – after his was destroyed in a bus collision.

Year 7 pupils at Millthorpe School arrived in class to learn their 11-year-old friend had been knocked over by a bus as he cycled to school along Tadcaster Road.

The road was closed off for four hours as police investigated the incident on January 23, which saw the youngster trapped under the Number 4 service.

He was later airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary with injuries to his arms and legs.

Friends have organised a bake sale this weekend and are urging others to buy their goods.

A sponsored bike ride on Saturday around the Knavesmire had been organised, but was cancelled amid safety concerns.

All the proceeds will go towards replacing the bike for the boy, who was discharged from hospital last Monday.

Rosy Rowley’s daughter, Scarlett, is one of the children who have already raised half their £200 total.

Mrs Rowley said: “They are all at school with him and were quite affected by what happened, so have decided to buy him a new bike.

“The children were quite distressed about it but wanted to do this to make the situation better.

“There’s a Premier shop in Holgate Road so they sold cakes to passers-by. They made £100 and did really well because it’s all their own idea to bake and sell them.”

Friend Josie Marshall, 12, added: “He wants a new bike. He is a very confident boy so it did not surprise his friends when all he wanted was another bike as his was ruined in the collision.”

The road was closed between Pulleyn Drive and the traffic lights at Hob Moor for more than four hours while police investigated.
