POLICE have released this picture showing the aftermath of a crash on the A64 on the outskirts of York.

A van hit the back of a lorry, which police say had broken down.

The accident happened near the Askham Bar junction at about 7am on Thursday. Three cars then crashed in to each other as part of the same incident. It's thought the lorry had suffered a tyre blow out.

The North Yorkshire Road Policing Group tweeted the image:

York Press:

The road was down to one lane and the accident also caused heavy traffic on the A19 Fulford Road heading into York and gridlock in parts of the city centre.

The road reopened at 11.55am.
