A MOPED rider has died following a crash in North Yorkshire.

The incident happened on the A64 at West Knapton, Rillington, near Malton, close to the junction with the B1258, at about 7.30am today.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said the 21-year-old man was riding a moped which was in collision with a dark Mitsubishi Chamonix.

The road was closed for several hours in both directions while the man was taken by air ambulance to James Cook Hospital. He had suffered from serious injuries and later died at the hospital.

Police have appealed to anyone who saw the incident to contact them, and want to speak to the driver of a car which was travelling behind the moped before it turned off towards Yedingham.

The spokesman said the driver may be unaware of the accident, but could hold information which may assist the investigation.
