TRIBUTES have been paid to a man who was killed by a car while crossing the A64.

Kevin Younger, 51, was attempting to cross the carriageway at Bilbrough when he was hit by a silver Hyundai i10 at about 10.30pm on Monday.

Today, his brother Tony Younger and sister Marie Burgess paid tribute to him in a statement.

Speaking for the family, Tony said: "Myself and Marie are devastated at the tragic death of our dearly loved brother Kevin.

"We would like to offer our sympathy to the driver involved in the accident. We would also like to thank our family liaison officer, family and friends for their continuous support."

Earlier this year, Selby district Councillor Richard Musgrave called for the speed limit on A64 at Bilbrough Top to be reduced to 50mph, after a number of accidents were reported.

In recent years, the site has seen a three-vehicle crash in March 2014, which saw a man airlifted from the scene with serious injuries.

A woman in her forties was also killed while crossing the road at Bilbrough Top in November 2013; another fatal crash took place in late 2012; and Ladislav Hosova, 43, from Tadcaster, was struck by several vehicles after getting off a bus and trying to cross the road in December 2006.

Cllr Musgrave and Selby and Ainsty MP Nigel Adams met with the Highways Agency and North Yorkshire Police to discuss lowering the limit and other possible improvements to safety, with an agreement made to resurface part of the carriageway.

North Yorkshire Police are still investigating the collision, and have urged anyone who saw the incident or has information which could help the investigation to contact them.

Anyone with information should phone North Yorkshire Police on 101 or email MCIT@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk
