BILLY idol’s Dancing With Myself is among the must-read autobiographies of this season.

Not that one had to be a die-hard fan, but surely the tale of the meteoric rise of William Broad from the parish of Stanmore, Middlesex, to worldwide Idol, via a stint heading Generation X, to the sad rock ‘n’ roller who was last heard of hawking a third-rate Christmas album in 2006, but is now back on relatively good form, should make a rather good yarn.

Writing the book has proved cathartic to Idol’s music career, as the songs on this collection are not bad at all, if dark in places. In particular, Idol recalls selling his vinyl and placing it in his arm on the title track.

The huge sound-scape production number Love And Glory is unquestionably the musical highlight of the set. Helping matters along immeasurably is Trevor Horn and former Buggle Geoff Downes, who keep proceedings either sharp and furious, or melancholy and dark.
