SO Julie Gunnell is upset that City of York Council is now “male dominated” and she says that “under Labour, there were more women chairs than men” and that “the Cabinet was equal” (The Press, October 24).
I’m surprised she is so keen to highlight the fact that members of her gender were responsible in equal part for the disastrous running of our council since 2011.
I also find it disturbing that she thinks that there should be a quota of either gender in key positions on the council.
In my view as a Liberal Democrat, all post-holders should be appointed or elected solely on their qualification and ability to do the job well. Gender, race, religion, sexual orientation or any other factor should be irrelevant, and that includes party allegiance.
If choosing by the criterion of ability alone were to result in the Cabinet being all female, I’d be content if they were the best people for the job. However, quotas are unacceptable.
