1) GAY rights campaigner Peter Tatchell is to speak at the University of York this evening. He will give the 2014 Morrell Memorial Address on toleration, entitled “Homosexuality: From toleration to acceptance” at 6.15pm in the Ron Cooke Hub.

In his address, Mr Tatchell will take a critical look at the 1957 Wolfenden Report and 1967 Sexual Offences Act as examples of an era of disapproving tolerance, before examining the transition to the current majority acceptance of same-sex relations

 

2) A YORK store is holding a fundraising event this weekend. Pets At Home, Clifton Moor is holding the all-day event on Sunday to raise money for Dogs for the Disabled. Breakfasts will be available from 9am to 10am and from 10am to 4pm.

 

3) A form 0f massage which promises not to put pressure on the masseuse has come to York. Teresa Bovingdon, of White Lily Holistic Therapies, will offer “no hands massage” and will hold official courses to teach the practise. 4) A SEQUENCE dance in Thirsk will raise funds for arthritis research. The dance will take place at Sowerby parochial hall from 7.30pm to 11 pm on Saturday, November 22. Dancers are asked to bring a supper to share, although soft drinks, tea and coffee will be provided. Admission to the event will be £4 on the door.

 

5) CHILDREN from Newlands Primary School in Pocklington have shared their harvest thanksgiving with the residents of Scaife Garth retirement home. Children sang harvest songs and gave residents the seasonal produce they had been collecting.

6) EMERGENCY services were called to a road traffic accident in Beverley. The crash happened at Keldgate, in Kitchen Lane, just before 11pm on Sunday. The incident is not believed to have been serious.

 

7) A JUMBLE sale will be held to raise funds for a York school. The sale will take place on November 15, from 2pm to 4pm, at Woodthorpe Primary School in Summerfield Road. There will be a raffle, tombola and refreshments.

 

8) HOLLY Tree Lane in Haxby will be closed for three days for essential resurfacing works from Thursday, October 30 from 9.30am to 5pm. Residents who need vehicle access during those hours are asked to speak to the workmen on site. The contractor carrying out the work will be Aggregate Industries/ Bardons, who will be responsible for safety.

 

9)THREE homeless young people are to give a an 89-year-old York housebound woman’s home a makeover. A new cross-generational project by City of York Council and SASH, a charity for homeless young people, will match young volunteers with older people who are struggling with jobs around the house. The first project will take place tomorrow.

 

10) THIEVES stole jewellery in a burglary at a house in Tockwith. Several rings, a gold brooch, costume jewellery and a green suede jewellery roll were taken from the house between 6.30pm and 10pm on Sunday, October 12. 11) SIGHTINGS of a blue Nissan Patrol estate car, registration T131 UKS should be reported to North Yorkshire Police. A spokesman said the vehicle had been seen in suspicious circumstances in the North Duffield area, and the occupants were asking to buy red diesel from a farm. Any sightings should be reported to North Yorkshire Police on 101.

 

12) HORSE owners can have their saddles and tack marked for free by North Yorkshire Police at R&R Country, Hemingbrough, on Saturday, November 8, between 10am and 4pm.

 

13) THIEVES stole bikes and lawnmowers from a detached garage in Great Heck between October 17 and 24. Anyone with information should phone North Yorkshire Police on 101.
