A CHANCE meeting on the dodgems may not be a fairytale romantic setting for most, but for one couple it was to be the start of a relationship lasting 60 years and counting.

Diana Caley met the love of her life, Peter, at Bridlington's arcade in 1953 and they married a year later at Bridlington's Priory Church.

Eight children, 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren later, the couple, from Hopwith Close, Easingwold, celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary on Tuesday.

Mrs Caley, 76, said: "My friend and I walked through the amusement arcade and he was on the dodgems having the time of his life.

"We looked at one another and he came over and we have never been separated since.

"He was the one."

Mrs Caley and 84-year-old Peter, who moved to the village 30 years ago after retiring from their work on a farm, believe the secret to a long and happy marriage is to never let an argument rumble on.

"We care for one another and never let the sun go down on an argument."

The couple and their extended family will celebrate their achievement at Easingwold's George Hotel on Sunday.
