SEVEN members of York Philatelic Society were among more than 100 mourners at the funeral at York Crematorium of retired Merchant Navy captain and past society president, Philip Hyde.
Mr Hyde, of Moor Lane, Strensall, who died earlier this month aged 79, was in the Merchant Navy for 40 years, and served notably in the Baltic and Eastern Europe, going to the aid of a crew on a fire-stricken oil rig in the North Sea on one occasion.
Married to Margaret and with three children, Simon, Louise and Rupert, he enjoyed stamp collecting in retirement.
Current society president Trevor Collins said: “It was a pleasure to know Phil. He was a good man who lived a very full life, and he will be missed by all our members, many of whom drew on his extensive knowledge of stamps and stamp collecting.”
