A BRAVE account was given by York under-11s schoolboy footballers at an 11-region tournament hosted in Leeds.

York started with a 1-0 win over Sheffield with Elliot Heath scoring the only goal, though it was a fortunate outcome.

Sheffield probably deserved the draw but some fine goalkeeping from Todd Edgar and brave defending from Dan Tingle, Isaac Meehan and Taylor Bell ensured the York boys got off to a winning start.

The second game pitched York against Barnsley with the rivals deadlocked at 0-0.

In a clash of few chances, York’s Dan Myers went closest to ending the stalemate.

The next outing brought York’s first concession of a goal and a subsequent 1-0 defeat to Leeds.

That left York having to win their final group game to be assured of qualifying for the semi-finals.

Another tight group encounter with North Yorkshire rivals Scarborough was finally ended when Myers got the crucial winner with minutes to spare.

But opponents Wirral proved too strong in the semi-final.

Despite determined performances from midfield duo Harry Tinker and Joe Watt, set-pieces unhinged York in a 3-0 defeat.

Tingle was outstanding throughout the tournament but all 14 players in the York squad made their contributions.
