YOUNG musicians have been honing their skills at an event at the University of York.
About 160 young musicians are descending on the university's music department playing in five different orchestras for the Yorchestra event which has been providing music-making for young instrumentalists from the York area and beyond for more than 20 years.
This summer Yorchestra welcomes two fantastic new conductors – Venezuelan born Natalia Luis-Bassa to conduct the most senior orchestra, Yorchestra 1, in a programme including a Latin American dance by Marquez, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak and Elgar.
Chris Bradley, a percussionist with Opera North and experienced conductor of youth orchestras is enthusing Yorchestra 2 with a varied programme including a Grasshopper’s dance, the overture to the opera, Nabucco, Respighi’s Pines of Rome and waltzes by Shostakovich and Teinen.
Yorchestra Young Strings is a new project this summer. For string players, aged six and seven-years-old, this is an opportunity to play with others for the first time in a small ensemble.
Jenny Clarke, a popular conductor of the younger orchestras at Yorchestra and teacher in the York area, is conducting.
