YORK Racecourse is gearing up for the highlight of its year, with up to 90,000 people expected to attend the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor meeting later this week.

Racecourse spokesman James Brennan has revealed some of the startling statistics surrounding the four-day event, which starts on Wednesday.

He said it would have record prize money of £3.5 million and feature the richest race ever staged at York - the Group One Juddmonte International, the £800,000 showpiece of the opening day.

More than 2,300 people would be employed on the course each day, including 80 chefs, with the majority of jobs filled by people from the York area. Many additional jobs would also be created at businesses across the city to cope with additional demand from racegoers.

"Seafood will be delivered from the Yorkshire coast every morning, including 2,000 crab, joining Dales lamb and 3,000 homemade beefburgers, Hawes cheeses, 6,000 fresh baked fruit scones and locally made diary ice cream on the various menus," he said.

"In celebration of that local food connection, Royal Opera House set designer, Caitlin Jones, will create a sculpture made from fresh food. Past creations have included a horse, jockey and even a bicycle."

Weathermen are currently predicting mostly dry and some sunny weather over the period of the meeting, albeit with temperatures in the low 60s - in stark contrast to the blazing hot weather of meetings in July.

William Derby, chief executive and clerk of the course, said: “The Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival is simply the highlight of our year.

"With the new development, the record investment in prize money, the stellar entries and all the new initiatives and innovations, this year looks set to be a landmark event of top quality racing action as well as a tremendous social and fashion event.

"I very much hope racegoers, punters and viewers will enjoy the feast on offer.”

Thats right. It is only a minority who act the idiot. Problem is, a minority of 90000 is a lot of idiots.

Sorry. Lets just pretend that the trouble doesn't happen, like we are supposed to.

Perhaps we should just imagine that the Racecourse does not bring millions into York's economy.

Stop whining people, the City is as wonderful as it is BECAUSE of these events and not in-spite of them.

You want to know what is damaging the reputation of this City? ask any of the tourists what they think of the Stag and Hen parties that arrive drunk at 11 am.

I'm struggling to see the difference between the stag and hen parties on the one hand, and the shaven monkeys in cheap hire suits with their molls on the other. Both get plastered and stagger round York in packs shouting, screeching, spewing and generally making things unpleasant both for the majority of visitors and for the people who live here. Can't say any of the millions they allegedly bring into the city ends up in my pocket, , nor do I agree that encouraging them to infest York does anything to enhance the place. Quite the opposite.

Woody you always get so bitter, last time you suggested my wife was an 'orange faced slapper and I was a monkey in a cheap suit' based on the fact that I said I enjoyed racing. You are a deeply unpleasant individual, I do not know why you are the way you are but evidence suggests that it is genetic, where your parents as unpleasant as you.

No contradiction, of course staggs and Hens will go to the Races in York, but if the Races were not on they would be in York regardless, did you really think that was a contradiction?...

That is the last time I try to educate the likes of you, I am assuming you are a troll because if you really meant what you said you would be so stupid that your career would remove your internet access.

That is the last time I try to educate the likes of you, I am assuming you are a troll because if you really meant what you said you would be so stupid that your career would remove your internet access.[/p][/quote]You'll regret that comment, Richard. Yes, there's been lots of vacancies for security persons on a temporary contract to cover "an event" recently

Standby for the residents complaints... Only a tiny minority of 90000 will cause havoc in York for the weekend

Quite the opposite.
eeoodares contradiciting herself yet again!

Does eeoodares not realise that the races are a great attraction for hen and stag party's, who then stagger their way into town?

eeoodares obviously commenting on something that she knows very little about...........agai

Woody you always get so bitter, last time you suggested my wife was an 'orange faced slapper and I was a monkey in a cheap suit' based on the fact that I said I enjoyed racing.
