Have your say on community punishments

PEOPLE in North Yorkshire can have a say on how to punish people for some minor offences.

The police and crime commissioner (PCC) Julia Mulligan is running a survey before the introduction of the “Community Remedy” programme in October.

The scheme will let victims of low-level crime and anti-social disorder have more say on how the perpetrators are punished by choosing from a list of actions for the perpetrators to take - like apologising for their behaviour, repairing damage litter picking in the community.

The PCC’s survey looks for opinions on the possible punishments and rehabilitation activities.

Mrs Mulligan said: “I want to give victims of crime an opportunity to have a say in the punishment, payback and rehabilitation of offenders.

The Community Remedy will only be used by the police under certain conditions for anti-social behaviour and low-level crimes, such as graffiti, low-value theft and minor assaults without injury, Mrs Mulligan added.

It will only be used when the offence can be successfully resolved out of court with the help of professionals and the victim can choose whether or not they are involved.

The survey is open until Friday, August 15. You can view the survey and have your say by going to northyorkshire-pcc.gov.uk/ CommunityRemedy.

The community payback scheme works quite well but needs to be more organised.

Surely the first thing should be to right any wrong if graffiti or vandalism i.e clean up and repair. Then i dont know if the majority of offenders are kids then i would prefer to see something more community orientated (like having to volunteer for local parish events and the like) rather than give them menial jobs like litter picking.

I see that the biggest vandals, little Jim and his rag time band of thugs, the YCC Labour gang, are not listed.
Alexander, Merrett, Tracy Simpson and Levene should be made to pick litter on the streets f York with their nlittle tutus until the local elections in May, 2015, when they will be out of the political arena for good.
They are a disgrace to York.

I agree. Speeding motorists should be made to pick up litter from the sides of motorways and dual carriageways, or sent directly to jail. Maybe then they'll get the message.

Community punishment MUST be hard on those who spoil streets and roads.
There should be chain gangs composed of miscreants to atone for their wrongs.
Start with Alexander, Merritt and co.

"low-level crimes, such as graffiti, low-value theft and minor assaults without injury", Mrs Mulligan added.

Well Mrs Mulligan you clearly haven't been the victim of any of these, or you wouldn't come out with such a sentence. What about emotional scars and life long impact that some of what you call low level crime leaves. Sadly you don't appear to live in the real world. One might be forgiven that this will distract attention away from the thousands you appear to very able to squander without any real benefits to show (nearly as good as the present rapscallions running COYC). Get out there on the streets at night on your own, not surrounded by a band of hi-vis heavies and see what it's really like. Get to know what fear feels like, not listen to someone else's account. Then and only then come back and try to engage with us about what we really care about and the actions we would like you to take. But, be prepared to understand that flooding the countryside with coppers hiding behind bridges and in hedges with speed cameras will not be high on the majority of peoples list.

Hey let's put arm bands on them or persecute there families and send them to work camps as this was so successful and popular throughout nazi germany and stalins republic. These ideas worked a treat. Shake your heads you morons. We need to work out whether society has let them down ( greed, capitalism and lack of education) or whether they are letting society down then have a re think as kids starve and the likes of Simon cowell and other such egotistical twerps rape society.

All in favour of survey to find public opinion. However one should be very weary of any mention of Shariah Law. Sooner or later, these openings will allow our values to be over run. I am not a racist.

Just as a quick example... kids who break glass on shared pathways should be then made to spend a week doing two unpaid jobs for 8 hours each day: first job to continuously repair punctured bike tyres (likely punctured by their broken glass); second job to pull glass out of injured dogs paws (the dog wearing a muzzle during the procedure would be an option that only the dog owner could choose) followed by clearing up the piles of dog s**t that get left around...
