THE Wolds Gliding Club in East Yorkshire is to host the 29th national two-seater gliding competition later this month.
More than 20 gliders from all over the country will gather at the airfield in Pocklington from August 17 to 24.
"Each day’s racing will see all the gliders launched from a start grid, using tug aircraft, then setting off to fly the course as quickly as possible, finishing again at the airfield," said a spokesman.
He said that if conditions were good, the gliders might average more than 50 mph, and the gliders taking part would range from vintage wood and fabric aircraft to the most up to date glass fibre machines, which visitors would be able to see before and after the racing.
Competition director John Norman said the annual event, which this year is backing the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, brought a significant number of visiting pilots, crew and their families to Pocklington, benefitting the local economy.
