COUNCILLORS recently passed a motion I proposed that could see a boost to Acomb’s Front Street by extending business rates relief to new businesses.

The council is keen to support retailers in the area in making Front Street a vibrant, high footfall shopping destination. Having had the street de-cluttered through the removal of redundant street furniture and installing new benches and flower tubs, the extension of business rates relief is the next step in reducing empty retail units and supporting retailers to encourage people to meet, shop and spend money in Front Street.

The extension of business rates relief for those bringing empty units back into use should boost the local economy by stimulating a wider offer and attracting more people to shop in Acomb. Other plans are in the pipeline so watch this space.

Retailers are embracing change in Front Street, change which will ultimately benefit their businesses and that is to be welcomed.
