The now traditional procession of the Yorkshire flag around the Bar Walls took place, with members of the Yorkshire Ridings Society walking round the ancient city to proclaim their declaration of integrity for Yorkshire to each of the three Ridings, and the city of York.
The white rose flag also flew over the Mansion House to mark the day, as well as Bishopthorpe Palace.
Closer to home, the residents of Haxby Hall care home marked the county day with a cream tea, courtesy of Yorkshire tea, a BBQ and a staff “Yorkshire v Rest of the World” game of rounders.
Manager Andy Hart said: “Many of our residents are Yorkshire born and bred and are rightly proud of their home county. Yorkshire Day will provide us with a fantastic opportunity to enjoy some fun activities with friends and family, where ever they hail from.”
The York Dungeon marked the day by announcing its Carnivàle King for the summer - with Market Weighton man Andy Harrison, 22, taking the crown.
Andy was chosen because he embodied the “rascalism” of the dungeon, and said: “It’s absolutely amazing to be chosen as the king and be part of this exciting opportunity. When I first applied I wasn’t sure what my chances of winning were but thought it was worth a try anyway and I’m so glad it all paid off!”
And in Nether Poppleton, staff at specialist vet products company Animalcare dressed up as James Herriot, who, although he hailed from Glasgow, became one of Yorkshire’s most famous characters.
Celebrations continue today, at the Golden Ball in Bishophill where a beer festival features Yorkshire beers and games. include welly wanging, flat cap frisbee and “Yorkshire Pudding-on-a-spoon” races.
