AN OPEN meeting will be staged in York next month to revive the Hungate Community Trust , as the re-development of the city centre area again gathers pace.
Gordon Campbell-Thomas, who founded and formerly chaired the trust, said it once more needed to be ready to play its part on behalf of the community.
He said the trust had originally been set up during the master planning exercise for the Hungate development, near Stonebow, in 2003, which involved proposal for 720 apartments and townhouses, office space, retail units and community facilities or public open space.
“After an initial burst of important activity leading to granting of outline planning consent for Phase 1, things slowed down for various reasons,” he said.
“However with detailed plans for 195 apartments being approved for Phase 2 of Hungate by the council earlier this year, and the news that Hiscox are going to build an iconic office block on the site, there is a need to revitalise HCT. Added to this is the news that the council has bought a share in Stonebow House, the future of which is as yet not determined.”
The open meeting will be held at Central Methodist Church Hall in St Saviourgate, between 2pm and 4pm on Saturday, August 9.
