Those who were interested in the development of the traffic on the River Ouse and the growth of the trade of York were practically unanimous in the opinion that Selby Toll Bridge was a serious hindrance to the York traffic.

The narrowness of the opening, the awkward position of the archway close to the bank, and other considerations, rendered it desirable that something should be done to remove the serious handicap to York. The bridge was over 100 years old, having been built under an Act of Parliament passed in 1791.

A pirate radio station Radio Free Yorkshire which had broadcast from outside the three-mile limit off Bridlington Bay recently, had been heard by only a few people on Bridlington Harbour.

It was organised by Mr John McCallum, prospective Liberal candidate for Bridlington and Mr John Crawford, prospective Liberal candidate for Howden. Mr McCallum said afterwards, “We regard it as a success. We have demonstrated how easy and for very little cost a pirate radio station can be used.”

It will only be a matter of time before they are all round the coast unless something is done to stop them,” said Mr McCallum.

A new type of litter bin was due to appear on Bridlington’s seafront within the next week. They would not be there for the run of the mill fish and chip bags and empty soft drink cans, but would be placed in position as part of the resort’s drive to clamp down on dog fouling.

The new bins were being introduced as part of the Bridlington Improvement Project which had already spent £10,000 on pedestrianising the Queen’s Square area of the town and provided new designs of bollards, litter bins, lighting columns, seats and benches in the Promenade area.
