IF tourists look up when strolling through our beautiful city, they will be impressed with the bunting, flags etc. But if they look down the situation will be very different.

The pavements are filthy. I saw a street cleaner in King’s Square using one of those picking devices to clear a pile of chips. Where are the electric sit-on sweepers that could clear the rubbish much easier? Why have the pavements in Gillygate stopped being swept?

The build-up of litter is an eyesore. In St Helen’s Square the amount of cigarette ends is baffling. Why aren’t fast food outlets expected to swill their pavements daily to get rid of the squashed grease?

All the efforts to make our city look its best for the Tour will be ruined if this situation is not addressed.
