THIRTY-ONE days before the peloton flies through the city the Grand Depart trophy arrived in the city.
The trophy was delivered to City of York Council’s West Offices yesterday morning by Welcome to Yorkshire Chief Executive Gary Verity, who presented it to Cllr Sonja Crisp.
It will be on display at the offices and the Mansion House until Sunday, June 8.
Mr Verity was received the trophy from the Corsican politician Paul Giacobbi at the end of last year’s Tour de France in Paris, and will in turn present it to the Mayor of Utrecht, host of next year’s Grand Depart.
Yorkshire is only the second name on the trophy, which was commissioned by Tour organisers before last year’s Corsica Grand Depart and created by French photographer Yann Arthus- Bertrand.
Mr Verity said: “This has been more than three years of my life, and it’s great that the Grand Depart trophy is finally in Yorkshire.”
The top riders have been in Yorkshire over recent weeks testing the route, he added.
With around 1,000 people having come through the doors of West Offices, the council is hoping many more will drop in to see the trophy while it is on display.
It will be moved to the Mansion House on Friday.
