York student in men-only charity race
A STUDENT who works in cancer research in York is taking part in the city’s men-only fundraising 5KM run in memory of his grandfather.
Fred Lilley, 27, is currently on a work experience placement with Yorkshire Cancer Research scientists at the University of York as part of his undergraduate degree at the University of Huddersfield.
He has signed up for York’s men- only fun run, R U Taking the P?, which takes place at Rowntree Park on Father’s Day on June 15.
Fred will also be taking part in the charity’s flagship cycling event, The Dales Rider, later in the year.
Fred said: “About ten years ago I lost my wonderful grandfather, Phil, who died as a result of having prostate cancer, so when I found out the money raised from the run will go towards prostate cancer research I thought it would be a great way to remember him.
“I initially signed up to both events as I’m getting married this August and wanted to get in slightly better shape.
“I’ve not previously done any charity events, but thought it would be good to set myself some goals.”
Fred, who lives in Leeds, is hoping to raise £600 for Yorkshire Cancer Research, and is already more than half way to his target.
R U Taking the P? raises money for prostate cancer research at the University of York’s YCR Cancer Research lab. Since 2010, the event has raised more than £46,645.
