TWO York teachers whose World Cup song has taken the internet by storm have been invited to a prestigious education conference where Michael Gove will be among the speakers.

Huntington School’s Robin Parmiter and Ian Wilson are to perform their song Bring it Home at the Sunday Times Education Fest in June, on a line up that includes speeches from Michael Gove, Shadow Education Secretary Tristram Hunt, David Baddiel and Ruby Wax.

The pair’s World Cup song has now attracted nearly 58,000 views since it was posted on YouTube earlier this month, and it has been supported online by celebrities including Miranda Hart, Jack Whitehall and Clare Balding.

Robin said: “Clare Balding tweeted it on the day the England squad was announced, and said we captured the “beautiful madness”of football. I think that was our favourite comment.”

The track has also been played on Radio 5 as part of a World Cup song competition and on Sunday, Robin and Ian played in an Emmerdale v York City charity match at Bootham Crescent and saw their song played to the crowd again.

Robin added: “It was really fun to go and play at Bootham Crescent. It was brilliant to be in the changing rooms and wear the shirt.” I managed to score as well, and that will go down as one of the best moments in my life.”

Back at school in Huntington, the song has the support of pupils and staff alike, and had its first live performance at the Year 13 leavers’ assembly.

“This kids have really got behind it, someone said this is what Huntington is all about - hard work, passion and inspiring people,” Robin added.
