TURNING our attention away from the North South divide, we are looking towards relationships between North and West Yorkshire.
This month’s question is: Does York need to work more closely with Leeds to grow as a city?
Earlier this year, City of York Council became a partner member of the new West Yorkshire Combined Authority, a legal body set up to manage investment worth £1.5billion for area transport and economic infrastructure.
James Alexander, City of York Council leader and cabinet member for economic development, said that the development marked the beginning of a new era of devolved government for local authorities and that it could also allow around £40 million of improvements to take place on York’s Outer Ring Road.
It could also provide another £20 million for a new bus station interchange to be built, should the funds be allocated.
The combined authority was created largely to manage funds for transport and infrastructure projects.
Does the city of York now need to forge stronger ties with Leeds and West Yorkshire in order to create a louder voice for attracting funds from Government, and growing the region’s profile?
Or does York have a strong enough identity to thrive on its own?
What do you think?
