DURING the coming weeks, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the D Day landings, we will see photographs and hear stories of this major turning point of the Second World War.

Sadly, my dear father will not be here to tell his story. This photograph was taken in Holland, July 1944, just after the landings (my father Leonard Howden is in the centre of the back row).

I don’t know the names of his companions as he, like many others, spoke very little about the war. In 2005, aged 95, his life came to an end and I miss him so very much.

We should all be so grateful to the many men and women who fought for King and country to enable us to have the life we live today.
