MATTHEW LAVERACK states he has never heard of bicycles being licensed.
In the 1950s and on Jersey in the Channel Islands, I remember my dad going to the parish hall every year to renew his bike licence. Every licence had a number of each parish (12 in the Island) at the top, with the first letter of each parish and a different colour each year.
As Paul Hepworth says, all this has been tried and abandoned.

Licence not new
AS FAR as I know, but no dates, Rhodesia had bicycle licensing (Letters, April 28).
