JUST 66 days to go and counting until Yorkshire hosts the world’s largest annual sporting event.

The Tour de France promises to bring a huge economic boost, but the Grand Départ will only last a couple of days, so it’s the legacy that really matters.

For a weekend in July all eyes will be focused on York and North Yorkshire, and it’s important to capitalise on this free advert to boost tourism numbers. But we hope there will be another spin-off: an upsurge in the number of people encouraged to take up cycling.

York is already a cycle-friendly city, and a new brochure launched today is designed to motivate even more of us to get back in the saddle.

We think this is a great idea. Cycling is a healthier way to get to work and with so many fantastic rides within easy reach of the city centre, it would make a brilliant new hobby.

The Tour de France will be a once-in-a-lifetime event. Let’s hope its legacy is more long term.
