I ENJOYED the reminiscences of Kenneth Bowker’s visits to Leeds in the 1940s and 195Os (Letters, April 26).
However, may I be permitted to correct him on the store in question? Lewis’s of Leeds, situated in the Headrow, was a department store built in 1928 by Messrs Lewis and was to become one of the most important department stores in the country.
There were other branches in Manchester & Liverpool at the time. The Leeds store closed in 1991.
Therefore this store is not to be confused with the John Lewis Partnership, recently opened at Vangarde Way in York.
