THE relocation of Bootham Hospital will also see its place of safety unit - which cost £400,000 and only opened two months ago - closed and moved to another site.

The unit, which cares for people with mental health issues who are taken off the streets by police, was set up after it was revealed North Yorkshire was the only country in England without a place of safety and mentally ill people were being taken to police cells due to a lack of other alternatives.

It will be moved temporarily to Peppermill Court.

Dr Mark Hayes, chief clinical officer of NHS Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), said: “The S136 Place of Safety opened on February 3, 2013. The facility was opened to meet a statutory requirement to provide safe and dignified mental health assessments.

“Of the CCG’s investment in S136, an unavoidable, nominal amount was used for the fabric of the building. It is expected that the S136 facility will remain at Bootham Park Hospital for the next 12 to 18 months.”
