AN ARTS and cultural festival has been launched in York to mark the start of the 100-day countdown to the city’s Tour De France Grand Depart later in the year.

York: Be Part Of it! - is intended by City of York Council to give everyone a taste of the buzz brought by the cycle race.

Green-fingered residents are also being urged to ‘plant the city yellow’ to mark the Grand Depart, with free packs of marigold seeds available.

It has also been revealed that York’s Designer Outlet will be the city’s second official Grand Depart Spectator Hub, with family activities, a large screen, street theatre and cycling entertainment planned.

I worry that York is over-egging the cake. Yes, it's a real coup that the Tour is starting here on one particular day, but how many other towns acting as start points are investing so much? Is York being disproportionate in its anticipation? What are Bourg-en Bresse, Maubourguet Val d'Adour or St Gauden doing? If they're not proportionately matching York's level of investment as start towns, why not?

"street theatre and cycling entertainment planned". All well and good, but I do hope it's not my council tax that will be paying for it.

Please could someone clarify what exactly planting flowers and street theatre have got to do with a bicycle race, part of which takes place in the City for a few minutes, one day in July?

regarding the travellers story above why are these people not tracked down by their vehicle registrations and sent a bill for the clearing up ? What law is it that lets them get away with parking up for free when everyone else has to pay ?

Tax is not a retail model for goods and services.

It's not your tax, it's our tax. We don't choose.

I'd like to try to answer your last question a little.
In France when the Tour goes through any place, no matter how small the village, they make it a huge festival. They feel honoured the Tour is visiting their humble hamlet and they want to show it by having a big old party and doing all those weird things with hay bales and tractors in the fields for the helicopters to film.
However, here in York, and on this site in particular, there's a bunch of prejudice against bikes. Some of it is partially understandable, people are resistant to change and there has been a lot of pro-cycling legislation and infrastructure put down.

I imagine if this was the world cup no-one would be saying "No ta, studded feet lunatics" or if it was a Formula 1 event would they be saying "No ta, noisy mobile advertisements?"

People are letting their cycle prejudice get in the way of seeing what the event actually is. A world class sporting event is not the same as a daily commute. What idiots do on bikes while we drive around is nothing at all to do with professional sportsmen entering a race.

I've just been to Welcome to Yorkshire's Y14 Conference today in Harrogate.
The venue was buzzing with TdF related news, and I spotted some well known CoYC Officers and Members who were flying the flag for our City.
York is but part of a much bigger story this year. Also we are a key part of the Yorkshire-wide 10 year legacy period, when many more residents and visitors will be enthused to try pedal power.
