S MCCLAREN says that after a number of harebrained schemes City of York Council is now showing a modicum of sense by bidding for a railway college to reintroduce apprenticeships (Letters, March 15).

As a parent and an employer, I know something of apprenticeships.

It is not enough for a young person to enrol at a college.

There must be a functioning firm willing to employ that student and provide on-the-job training and experience to complement the college course.

Unless the council can bring such a business here or is itself intending to create an enterprise building rolling stock, then it’s railway college idea will have to be added to that ever-increasing list of harebrained schemes.
