SOME will say George Osborne has worked a miracle to pull the economy out of recession, others will be less sanguine. But today is his last chance to prove doubters wrong; the final budget before the election campaign.

Britain’s economy may be growing and it is important that Mr Osborne introduces measures to keep it that way, but he must also remember those who are in most need of his help.

The coalition may be committed to further public spending cuts to reduce the deficit, help the economy and therefore create private-sector jobs. But budgets are also a time for addressing social ills.

Voters will remember today’s measures when they decide which way to vote.
