EVENTS took place across North Yorkshire to mark Commonwealth Day.
Across the country and world, local authorities, civic dignitaries, community groups and charities joined the public expression of commitment to the Commonwealth.
In York, representatives from the council and civic party supported the Fly A Flag For The Commonwealth initiative, with a flag flown above the Mansion House throughout yesterday.
Lord Mayor of York Coun Julie Gunnell said: “I am delighted the city is supporting this initiative which looks to recognise the global work of the Commonwealth and its strong values and great diversity.”
Meanwhile, in Selby, a specially written Commonwealth Affirmation was read out by the pupils from Tadcaster Grammar School and Selby High School, before the Commonwealth flag was raised at the civic centre, and the pupils were given a tour of the building.
Coun Michael Dyson, of Selby District Council, said: “I’m immensely proud to be part of the largest, single, raising of the Commonwealth flag in the history of the Commonwealth. It is a display like no other. One that encompasses the length and breadth of the land – and all led by local authorities across the region and the country, joining the Commonwealth’s global family.”
