THE Heslington Road area of York has again been given a spruce up - thanks to the combined efforts of City of York Council and the University of York Students Union.

Coun David Levene, cabinet member for environmental services, said: “It is always great to see students taking pride in the area where they are living and studying. This is also a really good way for the council to highlight the volunteering opportunities available to other individuals and groups who wish to get involved in their local area.”

Students’ Union president Kallum Taylor said: “This week’s Ground Force event is another great example of the benefits which student volunteers can bring to their new communities.

“Mucking in – literally in this case – and getting your hands dirty can be good fun and if it helps improve the appearance of Heslington Road.”

Umm, article has been up almost 20 minutes and nobody has blamed the students for making the mess in the first place! Guess they're all busy ranting about bridge closures and such like!

I think the shopowners and those letting the housing down this street need to take more responsibility for Hezzy Rd generally looking tired and untidy. Overgrown hedges/bushes, weeds sprouting from the half-built walls, with council collection bins strewn all over the place. All the students living in the area and at the University's own accommodation should be made aware they face a fine for dropping their takeaway wrappers and empty lager cans or bottles on their way home from town in the early hours instead of using the bins provided.

Residents always used to take pride in their streets and look out for one another, but now no one really cares as the blight of student lets land continues to destroy once great communities. And when those communities were great, no one needed a 'look at me, how wonderful am I' mugshot in the press. They just did it, even if there was absolutely nothing in it for them.
