ARCHAEOLOGICAL digs on the site of a new £22 million road in East Yorkshire have been completed.

Samples taken from the site of the Beverley Southern Relief Road will now be analysed, with work on building earth embankments and installing drainage now taking place.

An underpass has almost been finished and bridge beams to carry the road over the Hull to Scarborough railway line have been delivered.

Work started last year, and East Riding of Yorkshire Council leader Stephen Parnaby said “several items of interest” were found during the archaeological excavations.

He said: “This could help shed further light on the fascinating history of Beverley.

“Once complete, residents, motorists and the travelling public will benefit from improved transport infrastructure for decades to come.”
