THE recent revelation from the council regarding the expected loss of 250 council jobs over the next two years reminds me of the story of the fat politician. The said gentleman sat in the best restaurant in town, eating the best food, drinking the choicest wine while bemoaning how bad times were.

A fellow diner fed up with his moaning said: “But you’re in the best restaurant eating the best food money can purchase and drinking the best of wines – what have you to moan about?”

“Ah, yes,” said the politician. “But I can remember the time when I could afford to bring my wife.”

Will the expected job cuts fall to the man with the clipboard and pen or to the man working in the hole with the shovel?
